Rendering data in reports without creating physical layer objects in database

Hello All,
Is it mandatory to have a database and all physical layer tables with data in that database to render data in reports (all flavors of reports- BI answers, BIP and DV/VA)?
I am wondering if I can use data files (excel, CSV etc) to render data in those existing reports (all reports are built on RPD)?
This requirement comes because I am migrating my RPD and reports from OAS 5.5.(in one linux server) to OAC 5.9 (in other reporting server), however underlying tables (tables in physical layer of RPD) are not yet created for the target OAC server.
I need to give some demo (show reports with data) at target OAC environment before I create required physical layer objects at database.
Thanks,
