Substitution variable from Essbase Cube is not populating in OBIEE 12.2.1.2 rpd

Hi Team,
Customer is using OBIEE 12.2.1.2 and Essbase 11.1.2.2
When customer is importing Essbase cube in rpd then substitution variable of essbase cube also imported. But whenever they are trying to test the substitution variable at rpd,test result is showing nothing.

Could you please suggest any doc/ article to investigate further on this?

Thanks for your update here Robert. But that tips & tricks were for OBIEE 11g & my customer is in OBIEE 12.2.1.2.0 version.

Does the user opening the connection have sufficient rights? Just did a cube some minutes ago and it works like a charm.
