Modify Existing Dashboard (add columns)

Hi All -

Our business users have requested to add (2) columns to an existing dashboard page. From what I can see, these two columns are already present/available in one of the subject areas.

What is the best practice for doing this?

Please let me know if any additional details or clarifications are needed here ...

Hi Charles,

beware, all of OBIA uses the "Core" business model, Oracle went for a single business model that uses conformed dimensions to the max, BUT, there is many a 'fudge' in here as Gianni is alluding to, for me (others may disagree), Oracle should have created business models only for the dimensions / facts that will produce working results with correct figures. What they did instead was set the detail level to TOTAL where dimensions do not match to FACTs, which will mean that you can use a lot of them together, but will also mean that the results from the FACT will not be coordinated with the detail of the dimension. For me this is spurious and dangerously misleading to the end user. But it does make the developers job easier....

Ha ... hi Christian. That is on our "wish list". Maybe next year we will get started on that. Maybe Data Lineage too ... that would probably be helpful. Actually, right now, our OBIA instance is not the official system of record (that would be discoverer ). It has been a long journey to get OBIA implemented, but we've made a lot of progress (we spent quite a bit of time with the ETL component, and also did a 12c upgrade along the way) - but, I digress. Although, now that I am on the topic, the community has been extraordinarily helpful in many respects. I'll take this time to thank everyone who contributes! Someday, I too, will become more of a contributor.

Now, I must get back to the task at hand

Ok, here is what I did:

I moved 'Dim - AP Transaction Details.Purchase Order Number' to 'Financials - AP Holds.Document Details'. I do see that the other column under Document Details, 'Invoice Number', also comes from 'Dim - AP Transaction Details'.

Here is what happened when I tried to run the analysis associated with the dashboard pasge with the new columns:

So much for no suprises

I'm looking into relevant notes on MOS. Let me know if anyone has any ideas.

Where's my Beem meme - "one does not simply drag and drop in OBIA" ...

You are trying to combine two elements that are not logically related in the underlying OBIA Core model ... what you need is a true customization of the Core Model - for which there are rules to follow so you don't screw yourself for upgrades.

Thanks Thomas. I tried, albiet unsuccessfully. The business thought this could be an easy change ... but, I can see we have some complications. The good news is that we will be re-engaging the developer who created the dashboard, in the near-term. Technically, I am not a developer. But, I can see the lines are beginning to blur with this application (dba-etl-developer-analyst ). I will be sure to get take some good notes to better understand our model/data while he is around.

The role/skill-set lines aren't blurred ... unless the concept of a team is abandoned.

What OBIA contains is a massively valuable asset - needs a team to support it. The 'one-man band' can't play this tune very effectively.

Once properly supported, the asset needs a team who knows how to employ it profitably.
