Best way to start OBIEE 12c
Hi all,
Two part question.
1. What is the best way of starting OBIEE 12c so that if the server is restarted, the processes are started up in order. We used to be able to do this with windows services in 11g but from what I've read, we should be using task scheduler instead? I have also read that there is a windows service created upon installation which can be re-created using "installNodeMgrSvc.cmd" however I'm getting a number of errors using this method.
2. (and this may relate to 1) Is it possible to start OBIEE with a different user to the user who installed the application? We are having issues because the user that installed the application can be logged off. When this happens, the app is shut down. We would prefer to start the app using the NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM user however when doing so, only the admin and bi servers start. The logs are filled with "username and password is incorrect" errors.

ad 1.) I always use the scripts and just put them in the admin console as "at startup" etc. Never use the service approach at all
ad 2.) Yes but this being Windows I always start them with an admin account which is pretty much a clone of the install user. Also when you add the scripts to the system startup you can specify sth like "keep process running" - or the likes; don't have it in front of me.

I have installed and configured OBI using a domain account with admin privs.
Unfortunately for this account, there is a possibility that it gets logged off the system and when that happens, OBI is stopped.I attempted to use start.cmd using the local admin account but it only starts up admin, bi and java host with the obips, obis and obicc remaining shut down.
When I attempted to use the SYSTEM account to start up, everything starts except obips.
It seems access related but from what I can see, the SYSTEM account has full control of all the relevant files. I will add that we're using a shared drive as this install will contain a 2nd node in upcoming months.When you mention "admin console" and "as startup", what do you mean by this? Are we talking about the windows processes that are run when it starts? I've never used that (having only used services with 11g). Does Oracle have documentation on the matter that you know of?

Group Policies or something like that really can't remember in detail. Don't have any Windows servers myself - only ever used them under duress at clients

Which version of OBIEE are you using right now?
I also don't have Windows laying around, but using the standard services or scheduled tasks should work fine.

I can confirm that both windows services and task scheduler work fine but only with our domain user (which was the installation user). Unfortunately, this user can be logged off the server from time to time which causes OBI to stop.
What I have tried is running the task scheduler as the local account or as System which results in the majority of processes to start but some remain in a stopped state. I believe this has something to do with permissions on the catalog but everything looks fine if I check the properties of the root folder.

What kind of errors are you getting when starting with the local system account?
You are sure the permissions are setup correctly on the OBIEE folder and all folders below OBIEE?

I'll check in the morning (AEST for me) and let you know.
I'm almost positive it's a permissions issue because when starting as the local account, all but 3 processes start. Using the domain account, all processes start and using NTAUTHORITY/SYSTEM, all but 1 process starts.
It would make sense to me that if these 3 accounts had slightly different permissions on the OBIEE folder (and sub folders), then slightly different processes would start (or not).Can you confirm that assuming the correct permissions are applied to the folder structure, OBIEE doesn't care which user starts the app? I was becoming concerned that the only user that could start the app was the user who installed it which may have meant a reinstall.

Ok guys.
I've stopped the services using stop.cmd and started the app using task scheduler which has executed start.cmd as NTAUTHORITY/SYSTEM.
All services have come up except OBIPS.

So lots of access denied and erros saving the account to the web catalog. Definitely some access, permissions issues there. The joys of running things on Windows...
Personally I'd re-install clean. Takes me less time than search for a solution on Win normally...

I've raised a ticket with Oracle. I'm concerned about why the app dies when the user logs off. Does that sound right to you?Best case scenario, we can keep the domain account as the app starter.
