Escalate tasks & reminders to 2nd level manager?

Summary:

We have a certain task that a manager must complete when their employee is terminated. Is there any option to escalate the task reminder or the task itself to that person's manager (so 2nd level manager) if the task is not marked complete by the due date? If so, can this be done on the template or would it need to be configured in worklist/somewhere else?

If that's not an option, what are others doing in order to ensure important tasks are escalated if the line manager (performer) is not completing them in a timely manner?
