Details about Incremental Backup on OCI Volume Backup Policies

Summary:

I need to understand better about Incremental Backup on OCI Volume Backup Policies

Content (please ensure you mask any confidential information):

I have an instance running in OCI using a custom Volume Backup Policy instead of the default Gold/Silver default.

I understand how incremental backups work in theory, but I need clarification on how OCI handles the base backup in this policy. I manually created a full backup of the boot volume (121 GB of 180 GB). Since then, the policy has generated daily incremental backups — most are 25–26 GB, and two are 50 GB.

My question: Which backup is considered the base or main backup for these incremental copies? Is it the manual full backup I created (121 GB), or does the policy create its own main full base automatically? I don't see in the list of backups any copy with 120Gbs, only the Manual I had created before. If mine is the base, does that mean that if I delete that manual full backup (created by me) and then create a new one, will all previous incremental backups (25–50 GB created automatically by OCI Volume Backup Policy) become invalid or unusable for restoring?

Howdy, Stranger!
