Action plan for importing the configs if few configurations already exists in target environment

While importing the program to an environment where the previous configurations already exists, what are the steps to be taken care ?

eg: Few programs and almost 90% of the plans and configs already exists in the target environment. How can I over write on the already existing programs with the updated version of program
