Conducting performance evaluations out of the review period

We are planing to conduct annual evaluations based on the financial year period.  Review periods are creating considering that time period. But due to some issues we may not able to complete the cycle during the period. In goal management when users are entering goals (after the review period) it shows as overdue goals. If you experience the same let me know any challenges which you have faced?
