Creating a more visually pleasing roll-up view

Summary

Would like to create a report where the roll-up heading is shown as a single field in column 1.

I'm trying to create a report that looks like the left side of the attached image.  

I've created a custom object which holds all my fields that I use.  The column one values (Business, Product, Cost, Performance, etc.) are menu values of another attribute in my object (which I call "Element Type").

So as we add new items, we set the value of the first column (Element Type) as a user selection. 

I'm able to do a roll-up and have all of my elements grouped by the Element Type (shown on the right side of the attached image).
