Creating a report (not a dashboard) with incidents created and closed/resolved in a period of time



I am trying to create a report that will include created and close/resolved columns during a specific period of time. 

My current results include the columns based on the creation date of the incident, but unfortunately, the closed incidents show up as a portion of the created incidents. For example, if looking in May, I get 150 incidents that were created, and out of those 100 were closed. 

But, I am looking to get a report, and not a dashboard, that will show that for May there were a total of 150 new incidents and 200 closed incidents. In other words, the closed incidents column will include entries from previous months.
