How do I create a Performance Document for an employee's 'inactive' assignment?

Hello experts - is it possible to create a Performance Document for an employee's 'inactive' assignment? I created a document for someone but it's based on their new role, and brings in competencies from their new role that aren't appropriate. How can I create a document for someone based on their old role? On the "Create Documents" page, I flipped Assignment Status to "inactive" but I am not given the option of continuing to create the Performance Document. (I did cancel/delete the document that was originally created for the employee).
