Customer Site Number

Summary:

I generally used all my past project to have a numeric number for customer site number. I would like to evaluate what are the suggestions if we need to store alphanumeric value in this field. What can be the disadvantages in downstream and what can be advantage of doing so, I will still prefer to use numeric but wanted to evaluate the other option from all of you of any real life expereince
