Can tax be calculated on freight when allocated across invoice lines?

Our AP team is trying to find out if the system will allow them to add a freight line to an invoice with the box checked to allocate across the invoice lines and have tax be calculated on the sum. We use Vertex for taxes if that makes a difference. From the information I've read, this isn't possible but I wanted to find out if anyone else has tried it before I tell them definitively no. I also know that freight is taxable in some US States so how would this be handled?
