Is it possible to use employee type to assign a model profile for competency section?

Summary:

We want to use employee type field or custom field to assign a model profile for competency section.

Content (required):

Our current set up is configured to use Job profile. And every job code has a model profile assigned. We have 4 model profiles, Non-exempt, Exempt, Sales, and executive profile. If a worker has a sales job code, the performance document will be populated with competencies defined in sales model profile.

Instead of using job code, we would like to use employee type or a custom field to populate competency section. We will have 4 types, executive, general employee, sales, and manager of employee. If a worker has sales type, then the competency section will be populated with competencies from the sales model profile. Is this possible?
