Best way to count cases

Hello, I'm a little stuck here... Can someone tell me what the best way to count the number of cases would be in Oracle? I've found about 10 different ways, each of which will give me a different number.  I'm wondering which one would be the best for counting the number of cases within a given time period and why!

Basically, what I am trying to do is calculate the contacts per case.  This is not going well!

Below are the calculations that are used in various reports, all of which, if entered correctly, will give you a different number.  I'm not understanding the difference and why these would be used..
