Historical Reporting - Open Incidents at Certain Point in Time

Hi all,

I've searched the forums but have not really been able to find an answer to what I need.

I know looking at snapshots of data is impossible but I am trying to figure out a way of showing the amount of open incidents at a specific point in time. As the audit log records when the incident was created, and when a user closed the incident there must be a way to count it on a report as open during that time? For example, counting all the open incidents at the end of a certain month.

It's such a simple concept but I cant think of a way to create it. All my attempts have failed so far.
