Requisition approval workflow corrupted after deployment of new approval rule

We have a case of Requisition approval workflow corruption after deployment of new approval rule.
Here are the series of events:
Client gave us a requirement for requisition auto-rejection. For this, we created a new rule from scratch (without disturbing any existing approval rule). After the new rule was deployed, the requisitions which were already in 'Pending Approval' got corrupted. We had to withdraw and resubmit the requistions again.
Our expectation was that, if we are not updating/deleting any existing approval rules, the requisitions which were in 'Pending Approval' should not have got affected by this.
Can anyone from your experience can help us to know the system behaviour? is there a document in support? is there a SOP which we could follow for such future deployments?
