What is the difference between the available notification processing modes for checklists?

Specifically, how does BI Publisher–based notifications differ from Alerts-based notifications, and which option is generally recommended?

We’ve observed an issue with a checklist that is currently configured to use BI Publisher–based notifications as its notification processing mode. Although notifications have been disabled for all tasks within the checklist, users continue to receive notifications.

Could the use of BI Publisher–based notifications be the root cause of this behavior—for example, because the system is still generating BPM notifications independently of the task-level notification settings?
