I had reached out to support about the issue and they had me copy/paste and now it seems to be working. Perhaps I had a hidden character when I pasted. Is there a way to also get the alternate contact's information in a field?

Interesting! See attached. Also, when going through the formula wizard, selecting Primary Contact in the Field dropdown autofills with {contact} and that also returns the error.
