Description

NOTE: This is idea relates to BI Dashboards, PLEASE DO NOT post replies relating to Data Viz

Compared to modern / newer analytics platforms, the Oracle Analytics' dashboard user experience is becoming outdated and clunky.   The default styling offers little wow-factor when users open up a dashboard.   This is a problem not just for existing users but also when demonstrating to potential customers.

Building dashboards with wow-factor now relies too much on the creativity of the dashboard developer to add custom CSS/HTML5 styling - we would like a more engaging user experience delivered by default.

A sample set of images have been attached to this request that show modern looking dashboards from various competitors.

Requirements in this area could include:

  • auto-hiding dashboard prompts
  • reduce the amount of whitespace
  • lose the expand/collapse options (clunky boxes that appear around every visual)
  • give more layout options (as the current section/pages approach is far too rigid)
  • deliver more exciting HTML5 visuals/animations
  • enhance the mobile experience
  • reduce the amount of clutter in charts, titles etc
  • dynamic resizing of content (not just fixed to x pixels y pixels)
  • Reduce the number of screens to navigate when building analyses and/or dashboards
  • Increase the number of graphs types - especially ones that can show KPI style metrics (e.g. with target values etc)

Use Case and Business Need

Improved user adoption - a more engaging user experience will encourage users to make use of the platform.

Competition - if the Dashboard component is going to remain in its current form then it will fall behind the UX of the competition and users will want to use other tools e.g. PowerBI

  • Great news! most of what you show you can do using our projects.  Here are some quick responses with projects in mind.

    • auto-hiding dashboard prompts - We are adding more options to enhance filters, stay tuned.
    • reduce the amount of whitespace - See my screenshot I think we can get close to what you have in the screenshot.
    • lose the expand/collapse options (clunky boxes that appear around every visual) - No such thing in projects. Done
    • give more layout options (as the current section/pages approach is far too rigid) - Done we have flexible layouts and the content is fully responsive.
    • deliver more exciting HTML5 visuals/animations - Tons of animation, but we are careful to not do too much as to annoy a user but our visuals are modern and you can even create your own using technologies like D3.
    • enhance the mobile experience - Done, Full mobile responsive and adaptive!
    • reduce the amount of clutter in charts, titles etc - Just added full control over this including a bunch of formatting and background options.
    • dynamic resizing of content (not just fixed to x pixels y pixels) - Done - see above comments on layouts.
    • Reduce the number of screens to navigate when building analyses and/or dashboards - How does 1 sound? Done
    • Increase the number of graphs types - especially ones that can show KPI style metrics (e.g. with target values etc) - We have a bunch and are adding more. Plus you can build your own or get free ones from our library of 3rd party options. https://www.oracle.com/business-analytics/data-visualization/library-overview.html

Have you given projects a try?  Attached are some that I tried to make look like your samples.

  • Here is one more, these took me about 20 mins each.  I am a bit of an expert but happy to transfer my knowledge to anyone who is willing to evangelize.

  • OK last one for this post.  I decided to tackle the hardest of the bunch even though it looked like a screenshot from some bootstrap template for a totally custom built page.  I could have maybe gotten closer with our embedding features and a totally custom approach but I went with out of the box.

Hi Matt, looks lovely but I am talking about dashboards not data viz.
Data Viz is not suitable for enterprise dashboards (100s-1000s users)
We need this capability in BI Dashboards

  • I would love to hear specifics. My replies were direct responses to issues you were pointing out. Why is number of users it is deployed to an issue?  Simply looking to understand what is driving this and why what I have presented cannot work.

Hi Matt, what you presented cannot work because the solution is provided in Data Viz not BI Dashboards.   Our customer has >65,000 users of BI Dashboards and only 50 users of Data Viz.   We need the solution for the 65,000 users who use BI Dashboards.

Data Viz is for self-service analytics - it caters for a single user.   Data Viz is not for building dashboard "apps" that are full-proof, highly formatted and have enterprise levels of security and governance.

So whilst your Data Viz projects look awesome and I appreciate your thoughts, they do not fix the problem for our users.   Please therefore can you provide responses that relate to BI Dashboards only, this is not about what Data Viz can or can't do.   Thanks
