How to enter serial for asset in Subscription and best practice

Summary:

We reimplementing stand alone Subscription module. However we need to create asset with serial number for association. We are using REST API to create the asset. We have no inventory org defined. Technically API is allowing to create asset with serial in the master org itself. We do not think that a good approach to implement. Another problem we are facing, if we are creating the asset from application screen serial number is not coming up.

We are doing this for first time and appreciate if someone can help to let us know the best practice to handle this situation.
