Use .xlsx Excel templates in BI Publisher
Description
Currently only .xls Excel templates are available. The idea is to support .xlsx Excel templates as well in BI Publisher.
Use Case and Business Need
If .xlsx templates are supported, all new features in Microsoft Excel can be used. For example the Auto Save function in combination with OneDrive.
It would also become possible to use password protection for the Excel output generated from these Excel templates.
See the following idea: https://cloudcustomerconnect.oracle.com/posts/5d863e2d1f
As mentioned there: Excel output in .XLS format generated from Excel templates do not support password protection.
More details
It is currently not possible to use password protection for Excel output generated from .xls Excel templates.
Also, new Excel features like AutoSave are not available when working with .xls Excel templates.

.xls is also just old. Where .xlsx is newer so better aquited for current threads and usages.

Now data has been growing in our database we are getting scenarios whereby downloads are failing due to the tiny number of rows that are available in the very old XLS file format.
Oracle needs to update as a matter of urgency!!!

This would be very helpful

This would be very helpful if BI publisher can generate output in .xlsx!

this would be good

This would help break the 65k limitation while still being able to use a native excel template to customize standard reports from financials for example
As a workaround, using rtf templates with excel(xlsx) output is fine for 65k limitation break, but does not allow actual excel fine output, with dynamic pivot table embedded, and so much things excel can do...
Please consider making this upgrade!

Definitely Need, If this happens, we can use some xlsx feature in template which enhance the look of report.

Will be very useful feature. Vote up.

This is needed and .xlsx is supported with rtf and should also be supported with excel template.

This is definitely needed, and will help overcome the .xls 65k row limitation and allow us to embed formulas directly into the template, for which we can not do inside an RTF template.

Will be very useful upgrade

Has this been implemented. Can we use xlsx templates? xlsx templates are small in size unlike the 97-2003 templates.
Please let us know how do we take this forward?

Also looking for this update! Thanks!

This feature is a must for my client UKRI as well. BI Publisher currently allows Excel templates only in Excel version 97-2003 (*.xls) in Oracle Fusion, and this version can only accommodate first 3 conditional formats and we need more than 3 conditional formats in our Time and Labor reports.

Upvoted. In terms of data output in Excel, Oracle is few decades behind. It is frustrating to have data limitations of 65k rows (per sheet) on the output and then spend time in collating the data instead of actually doing analysis.

The client has been openly mocking the fact that Oracle has been hanging on to a 27-year old Excel technology. We really hope Oracle does something about this. There are already a number of enhancement requests about this for years now, and they just decide to leave it as is.

This would be so helpfull when Oracle could change from .xls to .xlsx
The rest of the world has done so 10 years ago!

Yes, please make xlsx available. This would bring so many benefits compared to the xls.
Thanks,
Eric

Is there any update here from the product development team? Why is Oracle not considering this change as it is one of the valuable change as part of the BI Publisher with Excel Reporting?
when will Oracle realize that this is a needed change please make it compatible with xlsx instead of just 97-2003 templates.
thanks!

@Raghavendra Raghunath-Oracle - is this something that you can help us to direct this to the product development team?

I wonder why it is taking so long for Oracle to address this… If it is technically not feasible, then they should just post a support note saying that 'Oracle can't do this' instead of making all the customers wait for more than half a decade.
