Customer email validation

Has anyone had any luck doing email validation.

The best solution would be during customer registration / checkout where the customer is informed the email address entered is invalid.

And as a backup to that a solution a back end process that would validate new / updated customer records prior to marketing campaigns being sent out to them.

I was thinking we'd have the script write back to three custom fields on the customer record one would be a check box indicating an invalid email addresses and the other would be a custom field that writes back the date the email was validated and another that writes back the invalid reason or code.
