Serial numbers on hand on X date?

What is the correct search criteria for finding serial numbers on hand on a past date?  I can run the inventory valuation as of 6/30/11 for example but when I customize it to include serial numbers it shows me serial numbers that are on hand now.  Also, if I do a search of inventory numbers I can pull a search of on hand or is available but there is no way to set a date criteria.
