Perhaps this setting was changed withing your setup: Setup>Company>General Preferences> "Show Employees as Contacts" Otherwise, I wonder if it has something to do with the upgrade if you were in fact part of the last group like pcutler suggested.

We are having a similar issue in which resetting a password is causing an unexpected error in some cases. In other cases, it will save and then say that the incorrect email/password was used upon an attempt to login. I have an open defect for a similar experience I had a few weeks back Defect#411472
