ongoing bank rec defaults today's date instead of remembering the period's date entered

When I open an ongoing rec for a bank or credit card, it defaults the statement date to TODAY, instead of the last statement date I put in and then hit "complete later" (which is now the rec I'm trying to continue on). Is there a way to have it recall the last statement date I put in when I started the particular reconciliation, instead of having it revert to today?
