Advanced PDF Issue

I have an sdf project where I've created an xml file. The xml file represents a an advanced PDF template. Once added to the project I can no longer deploy the project. I've managed to trace this back to the use of FreeMarker tags like <#macro> or <#assign> presence of these type of tags causes a validation error. Is anyone else experiencing this? The only way I've been able to get the project to deploy again is to make the file a text file instead.
