How to change one inventory item into another inventory item with different shape

We have one inventory item that is a sheet that is purchased from vendor A. Then we send it to vendor B to convert sheet into a disc.  We sell the converted item to customer. Both items have been set up as separate inventory items.  We are having problems tracking inventory needs and conversions.  Any suggestions?
