Can I find original field name/use from an ID in a script?

I am taking over administrating an existing NetSuite implementation and the person who setup and previously maintained it did not have a decent naming convention or good practice for commenting. As a result I have scripts and workflows with values things like {custitem57}.
Is there a way to search for these fields and try to figure out what these values mean and these things are doing?
