nlapiSubmitRecord Broken Again? (Sales Order)

Looks like nlapiSubmitRecord on a sales order may be broken again.  This code was working OK now I get INVALID_KEY_OR_REF:

var updaterec = nlapiLoadRecord('salesorder', sronum);
updaterec.setFieldValue('custbody38', 'T');
sronum = updaterec.getId();
alert('sro ' + sronum);
sronum = nlapiSubmitRecord(updaterec, false);

The alert I put in show the correct internal id.  I think this is related to this thread: https://usergroup.netsuite.com/users/showthread.php?t=5449&highlight=nlapiSubmitRecord
Any ideas?
