Custom Transaction Item Options

Custom Transaction Item Options seems not to be supported via script. Could anyone at netsuite give us a roadmap how to handle item options.

It can be done in clientscript by catching changes in the undocumented function call syncnamevaluelist(..) and read the data with document.forms['item_form'].elements['options'].value.
But that doesn't feel the right way to go...
