Custom Entity Field with matrix (2-d array) of values

EDIT: A good way to summarize my question would be "Under Setup->Customization, can I create multidimensional Lists or something conceptually similar and associate it with an entity?"

EDIT2: It seems that Sublists/Subrecords are used for this purpose, but they do in fact require creating a custom record type.  Creating an entire custom record type still seems overkill to me though, so I am still interested in hearing from anyone else.

I apologize in advance in the case that this is an overly newbie question.  Although I have tried checking the help files/this forum, please let me know if there is anything obvious I may have missed.
