Barcode reader + Barcode on forms / shipping workflow advise

We don't ship our own items (we use a 3rd party fulfillment service), but we are about to start shipping our own orders.

I am trying to figure out the most efficient way to do it.  Our UPS equipment will includes a barcode scanner.  Does that integrate with the barcode on the pick-tickets and/or Sales order?  If a person packs the order and scans the barcode on the corresponding pick ticket, what program would they be in (worldship or NetSuite) and what would happen?  Does it just fill in the reference number in wordship or does it do more?
