Unexpected Error using Formula (Numeric) in a Search

I tried a basic formula...
{systemnotes.newvalue}-{custentity_contract_received}

... and receive an unexpected error.  Probably received this because the System Note... New Value field is a date field and is somehow not formatted correctly as a date.   Does anyone have advice on how to take the date value in this field and format it correctly so I do not receive an unexpected error?
