Trying to get the External ID of the Inventory Item on a Sales Order

Complete noob here...I have a working Web Service routine that is exporting data from a sales order via a saved search connection.  I'm pretty sure i'm missing something simple but i'm having difficulty getting the external id of the inventory item from the sales order. (I'd also like to get the description eventually too.)

Currently working in vb.net but plan to convert it to C# after I get it running completely.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
