How to hide div containing NLITEMLIST

I am trying to hide the following DIV using javascript which contains NLITEMLIST. Following code is generating NLITEMLIST data.
<div id="scrollerSpan">
<NLITEMLIST>
</div>
I have put the following javascript code in the footer template of "Layout" and also in Home Page Template layout.

if(document.getElementById('scrollerSpan'))
{
document.getElementById('scrollerSpan').style.display = 'none';
}

But this code is not hiding the above div. Can anyone help?
