Gift Certificates – Error message if dollar sign entered

We are trying to start selling gift certificates on our website.  I noticed that if the customer puts in a $ when entering the amount the following error message pops up. 


Invalid currency value.  Values must be numbers up to 999,999,999,999,999.99

To make the website more user friendly I would like to:
A – Let the user enter the $ sign.
B – If we can’t do A, give them a more user friendly error message.  I can’t find where this error message is coming from.  I’d appreciate any suggestions.
