Error when displaying a custom field from a kit

I've got a kit online and I'm trying to display a custom field in the item template.  I add the appropriate code

<%=getCurrentAttribute('item','custitem_web_specs')%>

into the template and I get this error:

[Error processing dynamic tag getCurrentAttribute('item','custitem_web_specs') : record kit 31 not found]

All the other standard fields work fine.  For some reason the custom field makes it forget where the kit is. 

Can anyone shed some light on this?
