How to associate invoices with sales orders?

I found that several sales orders are with status of "pending billing" while there are invoices corresponding to those orders. This happened because my predecessor made invoices using  "Create Invoices", not "Bill Sales Orders".

How can I associate invoices with the corresponding sales orders?  I would like to have the status of sales orders which have been billed displayed as "Billed".
