Retained Earnings Calculated?

Hi,

Looking for verification - is the amount in a Retained Earnings equity account calculated? I don't believe it is but looking for confirmation. Is the amount posted to this account only from transactions (journals) booked to this account or is there functionality built into this account type to calculate amounts?
