v2007 - error changing list/record fields on custom record

i'm using an after-submit user-event server script to update fields on a custom record and getting errors in this form: UNEXPECTED_ERROR [Ljava.lang.String;@e435e9

the fields that are breaking are list/record fields that refer to customers, employees etc. The script can update freetext fields fine.

the code looks like
recordCreated.setFieldValue('custrecord_sl_customer', record.getId());
recordCreated.setFieldValue('custrecord_sl_sales_rep', record.getFieldValue('salesrep'));

any ideas what i'm doing wrong?
