PDF templates supported by nlapiMergeRecord?

Does anyone know if nlapiMergeRecord can be used to merge a PDF template? The documentation is unclear.

I just tried it and got an UNEXPECTED_ERROR:

 var file=nlapiMergeRecord(24,"supportcase",862); 


Merging with this PDF template in the UI works fine.
