nlapiSetLineItemValue updates value but not text

doing:

 nlapiSetLineItemValue('item','custcol_clientproject',i,rptCliPrj);


where custcol_clientproject is a custom field customer reference on tx column.

Interesting thing is it updates the field value but the list text of the field is not refreshed.  I tried nlapiRefreshLineItems(type) to no effect.  The other interesting thing is it saves the new value with the record so what is displayed is not what is saved with the record.

Anyway to force the list text to update.  Didn't see a nlapiSetLineItemText.

BTW, this seems to work fine for lists, just not for entities.
