nlobjList with pageInit not firing

I'm creating a custom page with nlobjList and search results.  Works well.  I attached a script with setScript and loaded/configured client script.  I see the script is loading with the page but the pageInit function is not getting invoked.  The function is declared on the script definition page.  Is there something special/limitted about the  nlobjList page type?
