Custom user notification

When editing a record, after submit the user gets a nice notification (green bar w/ icon and text like "Confirmation: Lead successfully Saved").  Is there a way to set a custom message to be displayed similarly.

(I hope i'm not duplicating someone elses question, I did a couple of searches but was not sure what terminology to use.  If this has come up before I could use a hint where to look.)
