Set doctype in suitelet for IE

My suitelet is not rendering correctly in IE because it keeps throwing it into quirks mode.  I know I can't set doctype in a suitelet using the normal html tag <!DOCTYPE html>.  Is there another way for me to set the doctype or force IE to render using the appropriate standards (not IE 5...)?
