nlapiRequestURL Server Side Takes forever

I am calling an external web service using nlapiRequestURL in a server side script. Specifically I am creating cases in a Salesforce instance by sending SOAP packets with the request. The receiving service writes to a field so I have to keep this in the After Submit to get around the record has been changed error.

It takes upwards of 45 seconds to save a case that is being escalated this way. Now, this is not a huge deal as the people that will be doing this are technical and are aware of the actions going on in the back end. This is also a rare (ish) action so shouldn't be a show stopper, but I was wondering if anyone had any tricks to speed this up.
