Most effeciant method for returning line items

I need to consume sales orders and invoices outside of Netsuite and was looking to leverage RESTlets to do so, however loading a record is a fairly expensive operation time wise for us (for a variety of reasons).

Is there a better way to get line item details rather than loading a record, or is that it?
