unexpected INVALID_SRCH_FUNCTN error running saved search

using a simple transaction search, including trandate with the day function as a result.
The following pseudocode fails miserably, with getColumns() exploding.
search = <em>nlapiLoadSearch(...)</em> results = search.<em>runSearch()</em> results.getColumns() <em>
Running the search in the UI works fine, but getColumns() errors with:
| INVALID_SRCH_FUNCTN | 8/13/2014 | An nlobjSearchColumn contains an invalid function: trandate: day. |
Why is this error occurring and is there a workaround?
I never expect getColumns() to throw an exception.
