Rich text field and CLOB

I have a custom rich text field that I am trying to output onto screen using response.writeLine() function.  Instead of showing the content onscreen I get <CLOB length: 4469>.  Any idea how I can get the actual content to show up instead of that?  I've already open a case with Netsuite support but they seem to have no clue how to resolve this issue.
